Philosophy

Present Sense is the part-time, completely unpaid project of a group of full-time mothers who share a passion for ridding the world of stuff for the sake of stuff and a determination to keep our passion in balance with normal family life and all our other commitments.

Whatever your views on the complex debates surrounding both climate change and the credit crunch, it's clear we face significant change ahead. Rather than waiting passively to see what that might be, we want to have a hand in shaping a positive future.

Whether it’s environmental or financial, we need a sustainable culture and that means making the most of what we have. (Karen maintains it’s also about having a culture where the economy is driven by our values and not vice versa - feel free to take her up on that separately!)

People conscientiously recycle rubbish and change to low energy light bulbs but it seems deeply ingrained in us that presents need to be new. However, if a thing has been manufactured, packaged, transported, sold and bought unsustainably, doesn't it have a negative value to the world? How can wrapping it in lovely paper and giving it to someone else miraculously transform it into a good thing?

Giving sustainably seems only common sense.

As to how we work: we aim to be ethical, family friendly and to enjoy ourselves in the process!
